Everyday Habits That Support Your Joints

Simple, widely recommended habits that help keep the whole body, joints included, moving well.

Artie out for a brisk walk

There’s no single secret to healthy joints. But a handful of everyday habits are widely recommended for overall health, and they help support the muscles, bones and joints that keep you moving.

Keep moving

Joints are made for motion. Regular physical activity helps keep the muscles around your joints strong, which gives them support. Many people find a mix works well:

  • Movement you enjoy, like walking, swimming or cycling.
  • Strength activities that work your major muscle groups.
  • Stretching and balance activities to stay flexible and steady on your feet.

If you’re new to exercise, or you have a health condition, it’s a good idea to check with a health professional about what kind and how much activity is right for you.

Change positions often

Sitting or standing in one position for a long time can leave you feeling stiff. Getting up, stretching or walking around every so often is an easy way to keep things loose.

Look after your overall health

Joints are part of the whole body, so general healthy habits count too:

  • Eat a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole foods.
  • Aim for enough sleep to help your body rest and recover.
  • Avoid smoking, which is linked to many health problems, including problems with bones.
  • Find ways to manage stress that work for you.

Listen to your body

Some muscle tiredness after new activity is normal. Pain that is sharp, keeps getting worse, or doesn’t go away is a signal to slow down and talk with a health professional.
